Prisa Strives to Ease Big Debt Burden

Promotora de Informaciones SA of Spain, after a costly and ill-timed expansion drive at home and abroad Shox Rhythmic during Spain's boom years, is now intensifying efforts to unload assets and attract investors to cut debt and generate cash flow. Prisa's challenges arise from the debt-fueled growth Spanish companies embraced before the financial crisis. The credit crunch sparked a dramatic drop in revenue as Spain slid into recession, forcing Prisa to come up with plans to sell prized assets at the worst possible time. "We've suffered from the global financial crisis, a structural crisis at the company level and a crisis in the media sector," Chief Executive Juan Luis Cebrián said during an interview. "We took on more debt than we expected when the markets crashed," he said. At the end of 2007, Prisa launched a bid to consolidate control of TV unit Sogecable, Shox Vivacityoffering a generous premium just before global markets staged a broad correction. The change in market conditions prompted key shareholders, such as telecommunications giant Telefónica SA, to sell their shares. Last year, Prisa tried to sell Sogecable's flagship satellite pay-TV unit Digital+, but rejected offers as too low. Prisa's board and Spain's Polanco family own roughly 70% of the company. As such, they have room to dilute their stakes if they need to raise more capital by luring potential partners. Mr. Cebrián said Prisa's main focus now is how to "achieve reasonable debt levels through p air shox artial divestments," hoping to complete significant sales and sign up new partners by year end. Prisa's debt totals about €5 billion, or approximately $7.3 billion. A key date on the company's calendar is March 31, when nearly €2 billion in debt is due. Prisa already has renegotiated several extensions with its creditor banks. Compounding the company's woes, Prisa's grip on the pay-TV market and football broadcast rights has weakened considerably in favor of Barcelona-based production and media company Mediapro, which is widely seen as benefiting from its ties to Spain's socialist government. It remains to be seen if Mr. Cebrián is the appropriate manager to succeed long-time Prisa Chairman Jesús jordan 11 sneaker de Polanco, who died in July 2007, just as Prisa was entering a critical expansion phase and right before the financial crash. Seen as one of the doyens of modern journalism in Spain, Mr. Cebrián, 64 years old, led El País for more than a decade during Spain's key democratic transition. At the time of its creation, El País was among the few leading publications offering alternative, center-left editorial analysis. Prisa's decline in market value has been extreme, dropping to €850 million at present from nearly €3 billion two years ago. Earlier this year, its liquidity squeeze was so dramatic that it was forced to delay wage payments. Mr. Cebrián said the lack of credit affected all companies, and added that liquidity issues Jordan Sneakershad been sorted out. The company is moving forward with plans to sell minority stakes in Portuguese media unit Media Capital or its publishing division Santillana, he said.

Cody exorcises demons from "Jennifer's Body"

Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody insists she is neither nerdy pushover or sexy cheerleader, as are the Shox Turbo V+ 5two main characters in her high-school horror movie "Jennifer's Body." But in her new Hollywood reality, she may embody a little of both. The movie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival late last week and debuts in theaters on September 18, is a campy flick centered on the intense bond between best friends -- the mousy character Needy, portrayed by Amanda Seyfriend, and the superficial bombshell Jennifer, played by "Transformers" star Megan Fox. But underlying the gore, jokes and high school drama, the movie speaks to female empowerment and explores the complex relationships between girlfriends. "(Director) Karyn Kusama and I are both outspoken feminists. We wanted to subvert the classic Air jordan II sneaker horror model of women being terrorized," Cody, sitting on a couch wearing skinny jeans and leopard print pumps, told Reuters. "I want to write roles that service women. I want to tell stories from a female perspective. I want to create good parts for actresses where they're not just accessories to men." Cody, 31, vaulted to stardom with 2007's "Juno", a story about an off-beat, pregnant teenager that earned her the Oscar award for best screenplay. She was lauded for bringing a fresh, edgy voice to Hollywood, and Cody and Juno director Jason Reitman teamed up again to produce Jennifer's Body. Apart from tackling the male-dominated horror genre, Cody said a key reason for writing the movie was to bring to the screen a new way of expressing the intensity of female bonds. "The friendships that I had as an adolescent had this unparalleled intensity," said Cody. " Nike air jordan2.5 I wanted to show how almost horrific that devotion can be. It's almost parasitic." The movie opens with this statement: "Hell is a teenage girl", meant to reflect the horrors of puberty. But the hellish emotions felt during high school often reappear as teenage girls mature into young women. "There's the scene where Jennifer's sitting alone smearing makeup on her face. I always thought that was such a sad image. She's so vulnerable. I don't know any woman who hasn't had a moment sitting in front of the mirror and thinking, 'Help me, I want to be somebody else,'" she said. "What makes it extra affecting is that Megan is stunning." HORRORS OF YOUTH The story follows a night that ends in a tragic fire. Jennifer, poss jordan 13 sneakeressed by a demon, sets out on a bloody rampage in which she devours boys, and it's up to Needy to stop her. "It's a meek shall inherit the Earth sort of thing. I think it's always really satisfying and cathartic to see a character that was previously bullied become super human," said Cody.

Tina Fey wins Emmy award for Sarah Palin spoof

She made reference to Palin, who resigned in July as governor of Alaska less than a year after she was chosen as Senator John McCain's running mate in last year's U.S. presidential election. Body Worlds plans cadaver show dedicated to sex

German anatomists plan a new show dedicated solely to dead bodies having sex a Air jordan VIII sneaker s part of the Body Worlds exhibitions. Gunther von Hagens and his wife Angelina Whalley show corpses prepared using a technique invented by von Hagens called "plastination," that removes water from specimens and preserves them with silicon rubber or epoxy resin. "It's not my intention to show certain sexual poses. My goal is really to show the anatomy and the function," Body Worlds creative director Whalley told Reuters in an interview, adding the sex exhibition may open next year. Body Worlds exhibitions, visited by 27 million people across the world, have been criticized for presenting entire corpses, stripped of skin to reveal the muscles and organs underneath, in lifelike and often theatrical positions. Von Hagens has already triggered uproar Nike air jordan 7 with a new exhibit which shows just two copulating corpses. German politicians called the current "Cycle of Life" show charting conception to old age "revolting" and "unacceptable" when it showed in Berlin earlier this year because it included copulating cadavers. The way a plastinate is exhibited can vary from country to country to reflect local sensibilities. A vote of local employees decided that one of the copulating female cadavers should wear fewer clothes in Zurich than was the case in Berlin. "Switzerland is the first country that already said from the outset that we could show whatever we wanted," said von Hagens. "Zurich is ready ... but it's maybe not so easy in every other town," he said. "We have discussed whether it is proper to show homosexuality and in what way. This is a very delicate subject." Von Hagens and Whalley said they both intended to donate their bodies for plastination, but would not leave instructions about how to display them, dismissing this as vanity. "I find it a great opportunity to give jordan 8 sneaker
something to others by donating my body, namely self-awareness," said Whalley. Von Hagens said he and some other body donors even saw plastination as an alternative to burial or cremation, giving them more certainty about would happen to their bodies after death. "Cremation for me is hell," he said.

North, South Korea Exchange Lists for Coveted Family Reunions

North and South Korea are a step closer to holding another round of reunions for families separated by Shox Fleetthe 1950s war. Hundreds of thousands of Koreans are desperate to see relatives before they become too elderly to make the trip. South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Chun Hae-sung announced an important logistical step in holding inter-Korean family reunions. He says North and South Korea have exchanged results of each country's search for surviving relatives separated by the Korean War. The exchange will help each side narrow down a final list of 100 Koreans each who are considered prime candidates for a six-day reunion at the North's Mount Kumgang resort. The reunions are scheduled to start later this month. North and South Korea remain technically at war. A temporary 1953 armistice paused Shox Saikano+fighting three years after the North invaded the South, but it has never been replaced with a peace treaty. About 127,000 Koreans have registered for possible reunions, having been isolated from direct relatives during the decades of cold war between the two sides. Most are now elderly, and say they desperately long for a chance to see family members again before they die. South Korea says the age and health of reunion applicants will be of primary importance in selecting finalists for its side. No formal North-South reunion program existed until the historic 2000 summit jordan melo 1.5 sneakerbetween then-South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Lee Sang-chul is the chairman of a U.N.-affiliated organization that helps separated families. He says during the past 10 years, South Korea has handed the North too much assistance, for too few reunions. Lee says the past two South Korean presidents gave about $1.6 billion worth of rice and fertilizer to North Korea. In return, he says North Korea permitted 1,600 reunions. Do the math, says Lee, and that is a cost of $1 million per reunion.

Five banks closed by U.S. regulators

Bank regulators closed four Midwestern banks and one in Arizona on Friday, bringing toShox Arraw+ 89 the number of U.S. banks to fail this year as deteriorating loans continue to take their toll on financial institutions. The closed banks were Vantus Bank in Sioux City, Iowa, InBank in Oak Forest, Illinois, Platinum Community Bank of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, the First Bank of Kansas City in Missouri and the First State Bank of Flagstaff, Arizona, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said. Vantus Bank was the largest of the five institutions to close, with total assets of $458 million and total deposits of about $368 million. InBank had total assets of $212 million and total deposits of about $199 million while the First State Shox JungaBank of Flagstaff, Arizona had total assets of $105 million and total deposits of approximately $95 million as of July 24. The First Bank of Kansas City, which has one branch, had total assets of $16 million and total deposits of about $15 million. The Office of Thrift Supervision said that Platinum Community Bank had total assets of $148 million while the FDIC estimated its assets as $345.6 million as of August 29, 2009. The five failures will cost the FDIC deposit insurance fund an estimated $401.3 million, the agency said. In 2008, 25 U.S. banks were seized by officials, up from only three in 2007. The insurance fund's balance dipped to $10.4 billion at the end of the second quarter, but that level does not include the additional $32 billion that the FDIC has set aside to cover the cost of bank failures over the next year. In September, Seattle-based lender Washington Mutual became the biggest bank to fail in U.S. history, Shox Monstersuffering from losses from soured mortgages and liquidity problems. The FDIC will insure up to $250,000 per account at the closed banks. The agency also has running a tally of problem banks that its examiners closely monitor. At the end of the second quarter, 416 undisclosed institutions were on that list. FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair has said bank failures will remain elevated even as the economy begins to recover because the bank industry is continuing to recognize loan losses and clean up their balance sheets. She has said the industry's woes are migrating from residential loans and complex s Shox BB4ecurities to more conventional types of retail and commercial loans that have been hit hard by the recession

Police combat crime by "lonely" elderly

Tokyo police will try to rein in a wave of shoplifting by lonely elderly people by West Cigarettesinvolving them in community service, a police spokesman said Thursday. One out of four elderly shoplifters in the capital blamed their crime on loneliness, Japanese media quoted a police survey as saying. Another 8 percent said it was because they had "no reason to live." More than half the elderly shoplifters said they had no friends and 40 percent of them lived alone, media said. "Making shoplifters do volunteer work in the community is effective," the TokyoAir Jordan 20 Shimbun quoted J.F. Oberlin University professor Akihiro Sakai, head of a police research panel set up to tackle shoplifting, as saying. "Instead of increased punishment, I hope we can rehabilitate shoplifters with special care." A police spokesman declined to confirm the details of the survey but said it would be released to the public soon. Elderly shoplifting cases in Tokyo reached all-time highs last year, nearly catching up with the number of cases involving young offenders. People 65 years or older accounted for 23 percent of the 17,800 known shoplifting cases in 2008, more than doubling in the past five years, media said. An example cited in the Ministry of Justice's annual Air Jordan 11 report on crime describes a 76-year-old woman who turned to shoplifting several years ago as a way to battle loneliness after her parents died. Over 20 percent of Japan's population is aged 65 or over, with that figure set to double by 2050.

New Moldovan parliament meets after communists fail

Moldova's new parliament holds its first session on Friday amid uncertainty over whether the communists, who have Nike Air Jordan 2009 run Europe's poorest nation since 2001, will go into opposition or strike a political deal to keep control. This first sitting is expected to kick-start the procedure for forming a new government in ex-Soviet Moldova and electing a president to replace outgoing communist President Vladimir Voronin, who cannot stand for a third consecutive term. Four pro-western parties, which emerged with the upper hand in an election last month, have formed a coalition dedicated to taking the country of 4.3 million, bordering EU member Romania and Ukraine, into the European mainstream. They have 53 seats in the 101-seat parliament -- enough to form a government, but too few to vote through their choice of president. The communists, who have pursued varying policies of closer ties with Moscow and integration Rothmans cigaretteswith Europe, control the other 48 seats. Sixty-one votes are needed to elect the president. The first task for parliament on Friday is the election of a new speaker, a powerful post which some commentators believed would go to Marian Lupu. He leads the Democratic Party, one of the mainstays of the Alliance for European Integration. But others believe surprises could emerge at the session, possibly with Lupu deciding to join forces with the Communists in what they describe as a center-left anti-crisis alliance. Lupu, a defector from the Communists, has suggested he could forge an alliance again with the party if Voronin left politics. The Communists finished far in front in an April election which prompted violent street protests by young urban voters. It was the Communists' subsequent failure to secure election of their presidential candidate that prompted the July election. Should a new deadlock arise, Voronin Nike jordan 9 would remain in office until another election next year. Whoever is in power will grapple with an economic crisis -- the economy is expected to shrink by 9 percent as remittances fall. They must also try to resolve a 19-year-old separatist rebellion in Transdniestria, where Russia has a military contingent.

Top dog Asashoryu refuses bus amid flu scare

Controversial sumo champion Asashoryu is in hot water again after skipping training because he did Vogue cigarettesnot want to risk catching the H1N1 flu on a bus. The Mongolian 'yokozuna' told Monday's Japanese media he would take the matter up with the wrestlers' union after being reprimanded for a morning no-show at the weekend. Fall flu season may be a doozy, feds warn

Federal officials on Wednesday urged business leaders to start taking steps now to reduce Nike jordan 14 the economic and public health toll of a potentially tough flu season. To help busy employers in the effort, the federal government also released guidelines companies can adopt to maintain continuity of operations while also playing a critical role in reducing the spread of a recently-emerged flu strain, now called "novel H1N1." "It has the potential to affect virtually every aspect of our lives, from our economy and national security to our education system," said Gary Locke, secretary of the Department of Commerce. "As such, it will take Americans from every walk of life, all of us, pulling together and doing our part to mount an effective response." Locke was joined at a news conference by top officials from the Department of Homeland Security, Shox Turb OH+ SLthe Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Labor. They urged businesses of all sizes to review human resources policies to ensure they provide the flexibility to maintain critical business functions with a depleted work force. The federal officials also underscored the need to maintain a nonpunitive stance toward employees remaining home while sick, or while caring for a flu-stricken family member. "In America, we love to praise the Puritan work ethic, and with reason," Locke said. "But this fall it would serve the country better to praise common sense and responsibility. Businesses need to drive home the point that if an employee sEpique cigarettestays home sick, it's not only the best thing for that employee's health, but also for the health of his or her co-workers and the productivity of the company." Locke, along with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, said companies should consider waiving policies that require sick employees to provide a doctor's note verifying an illness. The medical community, Napolitano explained, "will be inundated tending to those who are sick." Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said employers should encourage workers to get the seasonal flu vaccine, which will be widely available in September, or provide vaccinations at the workplace. And when the initial batches of H1N1 vaccine become available, likely in October, key populations should be nudged to get the vaccine, she said. Those include Air jordan XIX sneaker people with underlying health conditions, pregnant women or those caring for babies younger than 6 months, as well as those aged 6 months to 24 years old, because the virus has disproportionately infected those younger than 24. Locke also said businesses should remain apprised of community flu infection rates through local public health departments, as outbreaks vary by region. Should a spike in cases appear, companies can ramp up efforts to stop further spread among employees. Currently, the H1N1 outbreak is no more severe than it was in the spring, according to the guidelines. Since April 15, the CDC reports there have been 43,771 confirmed and probable cases of novel H1N1 infections in the United States, with 5,011 hospitalization and 302 deaths. Using those figures, 11 percent of those sickened requirNike jordan 12 ed hospitalization, and less than one percent died from the infection. But the CDC stated that many milder cases were unreported, so the actual percentages of those hospitalized or killed after infection by the virus are far lower.

Doctors' views on treatment futility often doubted

As much of the most vocal debate over the U.S. health reform bill focuses on non-existent "death panels," a new stujordan shoesdy suggests that many people in charge of making decisions for incapacitated, very sick people are usually not convinced by what doctors say anyway. Specifically, the study found that when doctors say an incapacitated, very sick person shouldn't receive more medical treatment because he or she will die soon anyway, people in charge of making decisions for that patient were often skeptical. "We found a great deal of skepticism about whether physicians can actually predict with certainty that a patient will not survive," Dr. Douglas B. White, who conducted the research while at the University of California, San Francisco, told Reuters Health. White now directs the Program on Ethics and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Physicians frequently use the so-called "futility rNIKE AIR SHOX TORCHationale" -- or the argument that further medical treatment is not appropriate because it will not extend a person's life -- to help loved ones make decisions about care. To see how people on the receiving end of this information perceive it, White and his colleagues interviewed 50 people acting as decision-makers for incapacitated patients being treated in intensive care units. The researchers presented the decision-makers with a hypothetical situation in which a physician told them their loved one had "absolutely no chance to survive the hospitalization." Thirty-two of the study participants, or 64%, said they wouldn't believe the doctor. In-depth interviews identified four main rationales for these doubts: being skeptical Air Jordan 16that physicians can predict the future; wanting to see for themselves whether additional treatment would indeed be futile; wanting more sources of information, for example a second opinion from another physician; and believing that God might intervene. The researchers also asked study participants about whether they would decide to continue life support based on a patient's chances of survival. Thirty-two percent said they would want to continue treatment if the patient had less than 1% chance of survival, while 18% said they would want treatment to continue if the patient had no chance of survival. The people who questioned the futility hypothesis based on their religious beliefs were four times as likely as people who didn't have doubts to say they would want to continue life support for someone with "a very poor prognosis," White and his colleagues found. However, those whose doubts were based on secular considerations were no more likely to want continued life support in this situation than people who didn't doubt a doctor's predictions. Doctors often use the futility rationale in situations whereNike jordan 17, for example, they believe the risks of treatment outweigh the potential benefits, or the costs to society are too high, White said. "These are important differences in what doctors mean by futility that often go unnoticed and go unspoken but have quite large ethical implications," he said. "At the end of the day," he added, "physicians and health care providers need to be very careful to not put their view of what's a life worth living on to patients who may have very different views." When a decision-maker has religious reasons for Nike jordan 12questioning the futility of treatment, the researcher said, doctors should seek help from a chaplain or other representative of that person's religion early on to "help mediate the conflict," while getting opinions from several doctors may help when decision-makers' doubts are secular.

White House says Obama strategy will win Afghan war

The White House said on Monday that President Barack Obama has a "winning" strategy in Afghanistan and enough forces on the ground to achieve U.S. goals despite advances by the Taliban. The assurances cwholesale cigarettesame as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan warned that the Taliban were gaining momentum, while gunmen and bombers stormed government buildings near Kabul just 10 days before a presidential election, White House spokesman Bill Burton said that Obama had authorized 21,000 new troops for Afghanistan since taking office in January and not all of these were on the ground yet. "The president's strategy hasn't fully been implemented just yet. But we do believe that with the strategy that we have, with assets that we're putting on the ground, that we are going to be able to achieve the goals that we're trying to achieve," Burton told reporters on Obama's Air Force One flight back to jordan shoesWashington from a North American summit in Mexico. U.S. Army General Stanley McChrystal, who will soon present an assessment of the Afghan war, said in a newspaper interview published on Monday that the resurgent Taliban have forced a change of tactics on foreign forces and that record casualty figures would remain high for some months. "It's a very aggressive enemy right now," McChrystal, who is also the NATO commander in Afghanistan, told The Wall Street Journal (online.wsj.com/). "We've got to stop their momentum, stop their initiative. It's hard work." The White House said McChrystal was preparing a thorough assessment of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan and U.S. officials will see what his review turns up. "Obviously the president is in close contact with his commanders on the ground, but ... thinks that the strategy that he put in place is a winning one," Burton said. Violence across Afghanistan this year had already reached its worst levels since tNike jordan 23he Taliban were ousted by U.S.-led Afghan forces in 2001 and escalated dramatically after major offensives were launched in southern Helmand province in July. Three Afghan police and two civilians were killed in a strike by Taliban gunmen and suicide bombers on government buildings near Kabul on Monday. Washington plans to increase the number of its troops to about 68,000 by year's end, more than double the 32,000 it had stationed in Afghanistan at the end of 2008. McChrystal may ask for more after he submits his strategy review in coming weeks.

Sarah Palin, radio star? Goshdarnit, now there's a lousy doggone idea

First she got a big fat book deal. Then she was supposedly being courted for TV R1 Cigarettesstardom. Now Sarah Palin could be taking into the airwaves in a different form, as the host of her own radio talk show. "[S]ources say Palin representatives have been quietly testing the waters to see how much interest radio syndicators have for her," reports Inside Radio. This is, not to put too fine a point on it, a stupid idea. And it's not just thatAir Max LTD Trainer Palin's media-bashing would sit uncomfortably with a career in broadcasting; Rush Limbaugh has managed to make a go of it, even though his 30 million listeners (or however many it really is) make him, by any reasonable measure, a part of the mainstream media he ostensibly loathes. No, the real problem is that Palin's talents, such as they are, don't extend to talking, as Air Jordan 21anyone who watched her hilarious/excruciating resignation speech or her career-killing interviews with Katie Couric can attest. (At least they don't extend to extemporaneous talking. She can, to be sure, read from a TelePrompTer.) Her voice is harsh, her accent jarring -- the opposite of the honeyed mellifluousness that radio listeners gravitate towards. She may be the "the hottest (ex-)governor from the coldest state," but having a face for television doesn't help much in radio. It's no accident that most of the top conservative radio and TV hosts, from Limbaugh to Glenn Beck to Bill O'Reilly, started out as broadcastsers, not politicos. Limbaugh was a top-40 DJ; so was Beck. On the other end of the political spectrum, Keith Olbermann was a sportscaster, and Rachel Maddow co-hosted a morning show. Radio listeners want someone who agrees with their politics, but they need someone who is, above all, a Esse cigarettesmasterful talker and entertainer, capable of constructing a pleasurable, cosy aural environment. Palin can't do that. Whoever gives her a job in radio will live to regret it.
